Silver State Schools Credit Union History

Silver State Schools Credit Union has a long history that began on December 2, 1950, when just seven members came together and submitted a form to create Clark County Teachers Federal Credit Union. With only $35 in capital, the credit union was local in the community of Las Vegas, keeping all of its official documents and records in Las Vegas High School.

Harold McKay: Silver State Schools Credit Union Founder

Harold McKay is said to be the founder and most important person in the history of Silver State Credit Union. McKay put a lot of effort into building Silver State CU into what it is today.

Originally from Kansas, he became a teacher in Clark County during the 1940s. He also taught at Las Vegas High School, where students learned about business education.
McKay had a lot of leadership experience, ranging from serving on the board as Treasurer, to eventually working as the manager with no pay. His interest never faded from the credit union; he almost always attended all of the meetings that were held. He had a genuine love for credit unions, which was reflected in the excellent service and financial products that were offered by Silver State.

Harold McKay truly believed in the motto of “once a member, always a member.” Even with his passing, these values are still enforced today, allowing Silver State to still be one of the most successful credit unions in Las Vegas and the nation as a whole.
